Upfront Continues Path toward Construction of World´s Largest Industrial Chromatography Installation

Copenhagen 5th February 2007 - Upfront Chromatography A/S, the world´s leading developer of customised industrial protein chromatography processes, has announced a collaboration with Solanic for the installation of a Rhobust™ industrial production plant for the isolation of high-quality functional proteins from the side-stream of potato starch production. Solanic is a business unit of the world´s largest producer of potato starch and starch derivatives, AVEBE. The installation can process over 100,000 litres of raw material each day and is part of a larger project ultimately planned to isolate even more than 10,000 tonnes per year of high value functional proteins for use in food and healthcare. The project will be the world´s biggest industrial protein chromatography installation by far.

The Rhobust universal processing platform, from Upfront, can capture, isolate and purify functional biomolecules directly from bioreactors and industrial side-streams. Alternative methods for industrial-scale protein recovery, such as filtration or traditional packed-bed chromatography systems, are unable to separate the valuable protein components with the purity and cost-effectiveness provided by Upfront. Rhobust enables excellent process control, direct scalability and reduced capital cost. Through development of customised adsorbents and selection of appropriate ligand chemistry Rhobust has exceeded all agreed objectives with respect to yield, purity and quality within the required production goals, set by AVEBE.
